The Perry Chess team finished the season with a 14-3 season record. The team placed fifth out of 20 teams at the Greater Rochester Interscholastic Chess Playoffs April 23-24. Perry finished the five game tournament with three wins and two losses.
The match pairings are based on division records. Perry first went up against Webster Schroeder, who went 8-4 in the regular season, and swept them 40-0.
The second match was against Brockport, who went 12-0 during the regular season and won their first match in the tournament. Perry defeated Brockport with four of five checkmate wins and a final score of 33-7. Brockport came out in Second Place in the tournament.
The third match pitted Perry against Geneva MS, both of whom racked up two wins to start the tournament. Geneva went 8-1 in the regular season. The Yellowjackets ended up losing the match with a score of 27-13.
The Yellowjackets faced Brighton, who had a 10-2 regular season and won their division, but lost with a score of 23-17.
The final match against Eastridge gave Perry their final win with a score of 33.5 to 6.5. The team won with three checkmates and two stalemates. Eastridge was 10-2 in their division.
Perry Chess, Team A was led by Adam Sprenger on board one, Merritt Smith on board two, Kinley Frazier on board three, Jeremy Zerbe on board four, and Melissa Kirsop on board five.
Kinley Frazier was awarded team MVP for his outstanding 4-0-1 tournament record. Merritt Smith and Adam Sprenger both won top (Adam) and second place (Merritt) scorers for League Five.
Perry also fielded a ‘B’ team of less experienced players, which included Sam Safford, Austin Slusser, Danny Davis, and Cassie Reiter.
